Growing Carrots

You can grow a variety of species and colours

Carrots seeds can be sown in early April until early winter. They are very hardy and frost resistant. Plant them approximately 8 cm apart, in rows ,of 24cm apart but preferably in a shady spot . They don’t do so well in full sunlight with the hot summer temperatures we are now experiencing .

As the plants start to grow, begin thinning them by snipping the tops off the unwanted ones, but not pulling them up for fear of damaging the others.

They should be watered well each week. Underwatering spoils the taste as does too much summer sun.

Carrots are ready to be picked after 2-3 months of growing and are 13mm (0.5 inches) in diameter .

If growing in a pot, it is ideal to choose a short rooted variety or a Chanteney.

Carrot tops are also edible and make a great pesto
