Growing Beetroot


Beetroot, also, is a very versatile vegetable. They are great for salads, and as a main vegetable, pickled or not. If using pots, sow in ones of a suitable size ie at least 25cm deep, or straight into the ground from the end of March. If the pots are too small, the leaves will wilt and show signs of nutrient deficiency.

They don’t need to grow in too great a compost depth but they do need plenty of water. They also need warmth, so if outside, cover them, should there be a frost.

Sow 4 seeds at 10cm spacings, 2.5 cm deep, in rows , 30cm apart, from the end of March to July. They grow much more successfully in clumps as they are very sociable vegetables !!


Water regularly but don’t waterlog.

The young leaves may be used in salads so they are a good double crop, remembering to leave enough leaves for them to keep growing!

For best results, sow seeds every 3-4 weeks. If the outside temperature reaches 27degrees, stop sowing. . Planting can begin again when the temperature reduces Harvest the roots when they are young and tender, and the size of a golf ball.
